Childhood itself is the curriculum
We believe children learn best when free to follow their curiosity. In our forest community, self-directed exploration becomes the foundation for genuine learning and growth.

“We can’t make children learn, but we can let them learn.”
— Alison Gopnik, The Gardener and the Carpenter
Two teachers who reimagined what education could be
Cedarwood was founded by two teachers and mothers, Laura and Brigitte. They set out to create a mixed-age, child-centered school where curiosity leads and learning becomes a lifelong journey. From their shared vision grew an alternative learning community where preserving childhood matters most.
Laura's foundation
Early years expertise shapes how children are supported in their learning environments.

Meet Laura
Laura has a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a passion for understanding how children learn best. Through diverse teaching experiences, she has discovered that true autonomy, connection, safety, and support are at the heart of meaningful learning. Laura is committed to supporting children in ways that honour who they truly are.
Brigitte's journey
Teaching experience led her to build something beyond standardized models.

Life in the forest
See how children engage with nature every day
Now welcoming children for 2026-2027
Cedarwood opens its doors to children ages five through twelve. We're accepting applications for families ready to embrace a different kind of education, one rooted in the forest and guided by each child's natural curiosity.

Self-directed education is when children lead their own learning, guided by their natural curiosity. Instead of adults deciding exactly what and when children must learn, we create a safe, stimulating environment where facilitators observe, listen, and support each child’s interests. Learning unfolds through exploration, questions, and hands-on discovery, with facilitators helping children go deeper when something captures their attention.
We don’t use standard textbooks or a pre-set curriculum; instead, literacy, numeracy, and science emerge organically through projects and exploration. Children learn academic skills as they become meaningful to them, with reading, writing, math, and science woven into real-life experiences. This child-led approach makes learning engaging, relevant, and long- lasting.
We do not use standardized tests. Instead, we observe each child’s development, focusing on the whole child: social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth. Progress is shared with families through regular conversations, and snapshots of our daily learning experiences are shared on our class blog to keep you connected to your child’s journey.
We have a maximum of 12 children in the program at any one time. We offer a mixed-age environment where children of different ages learn and play together as one community.
No. While our model is similar to homeschooling in its flexibility and child-led approach, we welcome all families seeking an alternative to traditional schooling. Whether you are a homeschooler, an unschooler, or simply looking for a more nurturing, freedom-based educational setting, our program is open to you.
Yes. We encourage families to spend time at Cedarwood and see our approach firsthand. You'll meet the facilitators, walk the forest, and understand how your child would learn here. Contact us to arrange a visit.
