Childhood itself is the curriculum

We believe children learn best when free to follow their curiosity. In our forest community, self-directed exploration becomes the foundation for genuine learning and growth.

Experience

“We can’t make children learn, but we can let them learn.”
— Alison Gopnik, The Gardener and the Carpenter

Founders

Two teachers who reimagined what education could be

Cedarwood was founded by two teachers and mothers, Laura and Brigitte. They set out to create a mixed-age, child-centered school where curiosity leads and learning becomes a lifelong journey. From their shared vision grew an alternative learning community where preserving childhood matters most.

Laura's foundation

Early years expertise shapes how children are supported in their learning environments.

Meet Laura

Laura has a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a passion for understanding how children learn best. Through diverse teaching experiences, she has discovered that true autonomy, connection, safety, and support are at the heart of meaningful learning. Laura is committed to supporting children in ways that honour who they truly are.

Brigitte's journey

Teaching experience led her to build something beyond standardized models.

Meet Brigitte

Brigitte holds a Master’s in Teaching and has over a decade of experience in both public and private schools. After becoming a mother, she wanted to create something beyond the traditional model - an environment that honoured children’s natural curiosity and autonomy.

“Cedarwood feels like an extension of our family. From the moment we arrive, we know our child is seen, valued and truly cared for. The teachers nurture not just a love for nature and self-directed learning, but also kindness, compassion, creativity and a sense of belonging. We are so grateful to be a part of such a heart-centered community.”

"Brigitte and Laura are probably the kindest, most compassionate teachers I know. Not only are they offering a beautiful way to learn and grow, they’re fostering a future full of promise, problem solving, critical thinking, and compassion not only for others, but for nature itself- the greatest caregiver of all. Thank you for your bravery, challenging the consensus and making other children’s lives so much healthier and brighter."

"We love being part of Cedarwood. It feels like such a meaningful addition to our homeschooling journey, offering connection with like-minded families and a beautiful, nature-based environment for learning. Laura and Brigitte’s care and presence are truly unmatched—they’ve created a space where children feel seen, supported, and free to be themselves. We’re so grateful to have something like this here in New Brunswick."

Now welcoming children for 2026-2027

Cedarwood opens its doors to children ages five through twelve. We're accepting applications for families ready to embrace a different kind of education, one rooted in the forest and guided by each child's natural curiosity.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers about Cedarwood, our approach, and what to expect for your child.

What is self-directed education?

Self-directed education is when children lead their own learning, guided by their natural curiosity. Instead of adults deciding exactly what and when children must learn, we create a safe, stimulating environment where facilitators observe, listen, and support each child’s interests. Learning unfolds through exploration, questions, and hands-on discovery, with facilitators helping children go deeper when something captures their attention.

Do you follow a curriculum?

We don’t use standard textbooks or a pre-set curriculum; instead, literacy, numeracy, and science emerge organically through projects and exploration. Children learn academic skills as they become meaningful to them, with reading, writing, math, and science woven into real-life experiences. This child-led approach makes learning engaging, relevant, and long- lasting.

Are there any assessments, testing or report cards?

We do not use standardized tests. Instead, we observe each child’s development, focusing on the whole child: social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth. Progress is shared with families through regular conversations, and snapshots of our daily learning experiences are shared on our class blog to keep you connected to your child’s journey.

How many children will be in my child's class?

We have a maximum of 12 children in the program at any one time. We offer a mixed-age environment where children of different ages learn and play together as one community.

Is your program only for homeschooling families?

No. While our model is similar to homeschooling in its flexibility and child-led approach, we welcome all families seeking an alternative to traditional schooling. Whether you are a homeschooler, an unschooler, or simply looking for a more nurturing, freedom-based educational setting, our program is open to you.

Can we visit before enrolling?

Yes. We encourage families to spend time at Cedarwood and see our approach firsthand. You'll meet the facilitators, walk the forest, and understand how your child would learn here. Contact us to arrange a visit.
